Seems to me the USMNST has been on the same level for years. More competitive than most would like to give them credit for (about one of the top 20 in the world) but just not really one of the best.
Top soccer players in this day and age are basically bred, not trained. They come out of the mothers belly, get vetted, seeded for the best year by year, exposed to intense sponsored training that is prioritized over everything else and then by the age of 15-16, you have some top soccer players.
All the (good) countries in Europe do it that way.
There is only so and so far you can get simply by being many people. From what I understand this is the model he tries to establish in the US as well. But it takes about 8-15 years before it spawns any players.

The problem wasn't Klinsmann, it was Michael Bradley giving the ball away every time there was a match with any pressure. I really like the USMNT, it's my adopted national team as the Norwegians are playing like Gibraltar, and The English FA's incompetence has reached Legend level. But, Bruce Arena? Again?!

Coaching US in this sport doesn't give any preasure to the team nor the coach. CONCACAF has 3,5 strating places. Which usually give US and MEX the best chance to play the international tourneys!

Noone expect from the USBoys that they win anythng, so at the tourneys they are always an underdog team and doing well in that position.

Was hoping Klinsman would build us into a top team during his tenure w/ his international reach. Ah well, next! licker, there are many who care 'a bit' about men's soccer here, like myself. Just not enough that care 'allot'. I'd say the culture of women's soccer here is far, far beyond that of men's & very popular. My cousins daughter is a young star for her level (junior high/ high school soon) & there are many, many young women, around the country, that are just as passionately involved in the sport. So, saying none cares is a fallacy altogether as women's soccer, if you bother to research, is incredibly popular. Likely the most popular women's sport in the U.S. & that says allot. To me anyways.

I have mixed feelings about Klinsmann. I think he did some good things here, and he left the team in better shape than he found it. But I also feel he did some poor things (in game decision making for example) and he clashed with the players a lot. But as others have said, building a modern team is as much about breeding as it is training. And the USMNT feeder system isn't on par with the rest of the world. I personally would like to see a change at the very top (Sunil Gulati and his entire staff) but that won't happen. So Klinsmann goes instead. I think it was the right time if nothing else was going to change. He'll probably go somewhere else and have success with better players. I wish him well. I'm ok with Bruce Arena, he's good enough to manage the ship for now. Until the team gets some new players and new direction, the coach isn't going to be able to make them significantly better anyway. IMHO
